Dr. Galea: Proper funding for women’s health research could save lives during pandemic

Dr. Liisa Galea and Dr. Victoria Gay wrote a powerful op-ed in Policy Opinions arguing that gender equality in research will drastically improve historically poor outcomes for women receiving healthcare.

They point out that "Women’s health research is chronically underfunded, and women’s health receives little attention across the spectrum of health research, from funding to academic opportunities. [...] A sex and gender-focused approach and targeted consideration of women’s health issues in health science research, policy, and practice will ensure we do not deepen sex and gender disparities in COVID-19 research and outcomes and promote an inclusive and balanced path for the future health of all Canadians. And it will save lives, faster."
